“Who can tell me what other seasons there are? So, how many seasons are there altogether? Now I’m going to teach you a dance about all four seasons.” Teach the children the tricky moves first, then play the track and perform the dance all together, using the choreography from the video. Remember to make a sun shape at the end instead of a leaf shape.
*Running time approx. 5 mins.
7. Action song: ‘Mr. Sun’ written by Raffi
Click activity name to open YouTube video link.
Sing the song acapella three times using the actions from the video. Encourage the children to join in with the singing the last time you perform the song.
Mister Sun, Sun, Mister Golden Sun, Please shine down on me.
Mister Sun, Sun, Mister Golden Sun, Hiding behind the trees.
These little children are asking you,
To please come out so we can play with you.
Mister Sun, Sun, Mister Golden Sun,
Please shine down on, please shine down on, please shine down on me. * Running time approx. 3 mins.
8. Working with Props: ‘Penny in the Water’ (adapted from ‘Penny on the Water’, traditional)
Get the children into a circle. “My favourite thing to do in the summer is go swimming. Now we’re going to take turns going swimming but first you need to learn the special song.” Sing the song performing the actions described below using the ‘imaginary’ parachute.
Penny in the water, (move the parachute from side to side to the pulse) Penny in the sea. (as above)
Up jumps a little fish, (as above)
And up jumps me. (as above)
Whee! (the children in the circle lift the parachute up high)
Then take out the real parachute, place your soft fish toy on top and sing the song and perform the actions again, flinging the fish toy high up into the air as you say ‘Whee!’.
Repeat and then put the fish toy back in your sparkly magic bag. Choose a volunteer to be the first swimmer. They hide under the parachute and jump up at the end as the parachute is lifted. Make sure to substitute ‘Penny’ with the child’s name and ‘me’ with the appropriate pronoun (she/he/they). If there are more than 12 children in your class, select two or three children to hide under the parachute at once and use the following lyrics:
Children in the water, Children in the sea.
Up jumps a little fish,
And up jumps me.
*Running time approx. 5 mins.
