take a wrong type, or a dog with a fault, which is very dominant in this breed, your decision can cause big, big damage. You have to look at your judgement from this point of view! Your responsibility is re- ally huge, when you feel that you’re there not only to give “one-two- three-four”, but to think about what you must do for the breed which you judge now. And if you’re going to the ring with this feeling, then it’s sure that you have read your Standard once more, that you know what is important for this breed, and what for this breed was created. You have to understand, if the dog standing in front of you is able to do the work, which we’re breeding for. It’s really much more di cult, than just to find stylish dogs, but for me it’s essential.
For example, when you’re judging hunting dogs, you always have to keep in mind their function, and to be aware of the specifics of their hunting work. The dogs from the Group VII must have di er- ent movement than the dogs from the Group VIII, and you should know why they are di erent. The same about Sighthounds, which are originally hunting dogs and still used for hunting in many coun- tries, – they must be functional to be Sighthounds; this means they must be able to hunt. But how many dogs from the Group X today are judged from this point of view?!
This is the question! How many judges, or how many percent of all- round judges today do think about their responsibility? One percent? Ten percent?
Lisbeth Mach (Switzerland), FCI judge
What do you think when you hear Horst Kliebenstein’s name or when you see it on a list of judges – what do cynologists, exhibitors and fellow judges all over the world think – and surely the VDH as well? Horst Kliebenstein is a flagship for Germany much like Roger Federer is for us Swiss folks. For decades, he has been somewhat of a celebrity, with all-round integrity and with enormous expertise in all cynological aspects, a wonderful, calm mentor for the next generation /
up- and coming.
Horst, you always gave me and many colleagues good advice and assistance, and you are a true friend with the heart in the right spot
– hopefully for a long time to come. I share your delight that you will judge the BIS at the World Dog Show 2017 in Leipzig, especially in your anniversary year. In friendship and with the best wishes for good health
