University Faces
In November 2018, two casts at Howard University performed Seymour Barab’s A Game of Chance with piano orchestration. Updated to the present day, the opera was set in the art gallery of a major university. Pictured: Asyjah Dudley as the third knitter
Florida State Opera presented Puccini’s La bohème at Ruby Diamond Concert Hall in the fall of 2018. Our productions feature casts of graduate and undergraduate students both onstage and in the orchestra with professionally designed scenic, costume, and lighting elements.
In March 2019, Rachmaninoff’s Aleko premiered at the Scottish Rite Theater and was performed by members of the voice studio from the University of Texas at Austin Butler School of Music. Pictured (L to R): Mikhail Smigelski as Aleko, Heather Lewis as the gypsy woman, and Nikita Storojev as the old gypsy man.
The University of Tulsa’s (TU) April 2019 production of Douglas Moore’s opera Gallantry. Pictured: Jesica Santino as Nurse Lola Markham, Mason O’Brien as Dr. Gregg, and Jericho Stratton
as Donald Hopewell. Since TU doesn’t have a graduate music program, all our opera roles go to undergraduates.
Vocal studies at DePaul University combine the fundamentals of singing and vocal technique with the study of acting, language, and the entirety of the musical experience. Pictured: members of the DePaul Opera Theatre program in a production of Hansel and Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck, March 2019.
