EATPortuguese cuisine is extremely rich, tasty and full of heritage, from desserts to drinks, you’ll find a great variety of flavours. Specialties like grilled sardines, delicious chicken piri-piri or a Cataplana (a stew with meat or fish) are a must. Fresh fish and fruits are an absolute joy due to all the hours of sunshine the Algarve is exposed to. The Portuguese love their sweets and desserts, with many ‘pastelarias’ (pastry shops) around, where treats include dom Rodrigo, Bolinhos de Amêndoa and Pastéis de Nata.
SEE The Algarve is a land of contrast. The popular and more developed central region offer lively coastal resorts, first-rate tourist amenities, and some of Portugal’s best
golf courses. Further east, a string of sandbar islands and lagoons form part of a beautiful and protected natural park, and a distinctly Spanish atmosphere pervades the border towns and villages. Over to the west, a very different algarve beckons. Wilder and more remote, this is a place to escape from the crowds and very popular with surfers.
DO There are a number of excellent waterparks – aqualand and Slide & Splash waterparks are two of the best attractions in the Algarve, providing endless fun for the whole family. Zoomarine, water theme park just a few miles from albufeira, offers plenty of activities, with the dolphins Emotions Centre certainly being a big draw. Visit the stunning coastline on a boating adventure or the fabulous sandy beaches offering a wide range of water sports – the choice is yours!
