TIP FOR 2020: in April, the Maritime Museum
will launch an exhibition about the history of the port of Rotterdam; among other things, it will feature one hundred different ship models.
Two museums,
ANY PERSON WHO HAS EVER OPTED FOR A PROFESSION ON OR NEAR THE WATER ALMOST AUTOMATICALLY BECOMES INFECTED WITH THE MARITIME VIRUS. THE MARITIME MUSEUM ROTTERDAM (MUSEUM OF THE YEAR IN THE NETHERLANDS
IN 2018) AND THE MUZEEUM IN VLISSINGEN (BEST DAY OUT
IN THE PROVINCE OF ZEELAND IN 2018) ARE A TRUE MECCA FOR THESE KINDS OF PEOPLE. FOR ANYONE WHO IS NOT YET FAMILIAR WITH THE MARITIME WORLD - ESPECIALLY CHILDREN - BOTH MUSEUMS PROMISE A TRUE JOURNEY OF DISCOVERY.
MARITIME MUSEUM ROTTERDAM
The Maritime Museum Rotterdam in particular is very hands-on and interactive. For the very young, this starts at the permanent Professor Plons play paradise. The ‘Sea Monsters’ exhibition takes families on a voyage of discovery. And those who crave more excitement can immerse themselves in the ‘Dealing with drugs’ exhibition. Next, put on your safety helmet and vest and experience what it’s like to visit a platform at sea in the Offshore Experience.
These are just a few examples of the museum’s interactive approach, which aims to make the general public more aware of the vast influence that the maritime sector has on daily life. Once you are finished at the museum, you can visit the open-air harbour museum
right next door. Here, you can explore the country’s rich maritime heritage: from historic ships to a lighthouse, from grain elevator to giant floating sheerleg crane. And who knows, just at that very moment a visiting cruise ship might very well be moored in the background, on the other side of the river. Could a day at the museum possibly be any more maritime?
