Story: Adhiyogi’s Trailblazing Entry into a Women’s Wellness Space
In the winter of 2000, Adhiyogi took a significant step in his early professional journey as a Yoga teacher by becoming the first-ever male instructor at the Women’s Fitness Company in Springfield, Virginia. Up until then, the fitness space had been an exclusively female domain, both in terms of membership and instruction. His presence marked a pivotal moment — not just for the studio, but for Adhiyogi himself as he broke traditional molds with a blend of gentleness, depth, and respect for space.
Despite initial surprise from some students — one humorously commenting on being relieved that his attire was modest — Adhiyogi quickly won over the class with his calm demeanor and attentive instruction. His classes emphasized not just movement but understanding, encouraging participants to absorb the deeper principles behind each posture.
One student wrote with delight, “I really enjoy Adhiyogi’s class. It feels good. Stretching, twisting, and learning! I hope he continues.” Another noted, “This instructor was very encouraging. He was able to clearly explain the how-s and why-s of the moves.” His emphasis on progressive understanding, rather than simply going through the motions, made a strong impression. While some felt he talked a lot, others appreciated that he took the time to ensure that each pose was explained and embodied, rather than rushed.
Another attendee remarked that it didn’t feel like a casual drop-in session, but rather a guided journey — and rightly so. Adhiyogi’s structured and thoughtful instruction slowly transformed the energy of the room, making each student feel both challenged and supported.
This class, his second known professional yoga teaching engagement, helped him establish a firm reputation in the region for his depth of knowledge, methodical style, and inclusive spirit. His presence in an all-women's setting opened minds and expanded possibilities — not just for his students, but for the larger wellness community.
Adhiyogi was not just teaching Yoga. He was gently shifting paradigms, one breath, one posture, one mindful conversation at a time.
OM Shantiḥ.
