a lower-risk team (portfolio), I’d pick more defenders; similarly, if I wanted a higher-risk team, I’d go for more forwards. You can pick whatever formation you want – the key is to make sure your formation is consistent with both the level of risk you want to take and the kind of returns you are looking for.
Playing around with the numbers above, if I want to try and reduce my risk then rather than having a 1,3,3,4 formation I could go for 1,5,3,2. I hope this makes sense.
You can also pay different amounts for each player; for example, I may want to spend a lot more on my defenders and goalkeeper than my midfielders and forwards. It's up to you – but performance and risk go hand in hand – try and manage them.
In terms of the minimum amount for each player, that’s difficult to determine (you must discuss this with your financial advisor), but given it’s likely to cost about £20 to buy shares and a similar amount to sell them, then if you take say £50 as your costs (there will also be some costs associated with having a brokerage account), then £800 would mean costs of 6.25% (50/800). It’s very much up to you, but I’d have thought that an investment below this level could mean that your costs could become “out of whack” with your investment. Please bear in mind that if you hold the shares for more than a year that this percentage could well go down a lot – you probably only buy and sell the shares once!
It’s nevertheless important to bear in mind that a very high-risk explorer could deliver amazing returns if it finds anything – but there’s a very good chance it won’t. So you don’t want to invest too heavily into it.
