The added items in the revised ECERS are Interaction (staff-child, child-child and discipline), Curriculum (nature/science and math/number) Health and Safety and Parents and Staff. They add value as culturally sensitive indicators for various items in the rating scale.
The ECERS scale has been designed to follow closely the realistic field-based sites. Based on good inter-rater reliability and validity, the rating scale is appropriate for research and programme evaluation. It is also suitable for programme improvement efforts. The scale consists of 43 items organised into seven subscales (Figure 5.12).
