First, the building layout is concerned with the location in relation to other physical features and other activity areas. Second, the boundaries define the extent of the space; how big or small each area is. Third, play and sitting surfaces appropriateness for the activities during the learning process. Fourth, the storage area ensures that the materials are kept safely and they can be conveniently used whenever required for any activity. Fifth, the mood for the area should be conducive for creating and encouraging learning.
ACTIVITY 6.3
In some cultures, a lot of money is spent on making the administratorsÊ offices look fanciful and elegant. Do you think this is important? Why or why not? Discuss in groups and present your findings to the class.
6.6 BUILDING SYSTEM
For a building to be manageable and suitable for young learners, there must be a system in place. The choice of system will have an impact on the costing of the overall building. For example, the use of sustainable and environmentally friendly material can be crucial for saving cost. Other considerations of long-term costing are shown in Table 6.1.

1. Installing U-traps in toilets as toys and childrenÊs small clothing may be trapped in the toilets. This is much cheaper than continuously repairing the toilet.
