Museums
We welcome you to relive the past and discover Queen Anne’s rich history and culture. The center’s museum celebrates the vibrant culture of the area. Here you can learn about the changing Chesapeake Bay, the abundant maritime industry, local farming and agriculture, and the construction of one of Maryland’s Wonders, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.
As a result of the Great Storm (Johnstown Flood) of 1889, James E. Kirwan, a local farmer, merchant, and retired Oyster Navy Commander, was able to build a house with attached store out of vast quantities of lumber which landed on the shores of Kent Island. Kirwan, known as “The Grand Old Man of Kent Island” served as Maryland State Senator from 1900-1908. The Kirwan House is now operated as a museum and is owned by the Kent Island Heritage Society, Inc. Discover, tour and explore!
While visiting Queen Anne’s county, don’t miss the Stevensville Bank Building, Queenstown Colonial Courthouse, or Queen Anne’s Museum of Eastern Shore Life for more Maryland history and interesting facts.
