Making the Most of Life
Jimmy, now 36, was just
7 years old when a motor vehicle accident altered the course of his life. His injuries left him using a wheelchair due to quadriplegia
and breathing with the assistance of a trach and vent. Most people would think their chance of living a full life was no longer a possibility, but Jimmy had other plans.
When Jimmy became a client, he was already an avid sports fan, fisherman, and music lover. He specifically asked for a nurse who would be
“into” the same things he was. Jimmy’s BAYADA office team prioritized finding
not only the right clinician with the complex skills needed to care for Jimmy, but also someone who would connect with him on a personal level, share his
passions, travel with him, and be more of a friend than a clinician. They found the perfect match in Dave.
Dave is all about making the most of life
and jumped at the chance to help Jimmy participate in the activities that bring him
joy. Always one to try new things, Dave never said no to anything that Jimmy wanted to do. Concerts, ballgames, fishing, airshows. They’ve done it all. Together.
“Dave is like a buddy,” explains Jimmy. “It doesn’t feel like a nurse-patient relationship. It’s like hanging out with a good friend.”
And although they have a lot of fun together, there’s so much more to their relationship.
“Jimmy knows he can talk to me about what’s bothering him, if he’s feeling down or upset. It’s important to let him vent and say what he’s got to say,” says Dave. “And he’s a good listener, too. I can tell him about something that’s driving me nuts or share something about one of my kids. We just care about each other on a personal level and that’s what makes our relationship so great.”
