Taking Extra Steps
When Mrs. Lopez moved into a senior living community, her cognitive impairments didn’t make the transition easy. She resisted her new routine, repeatedly refusing to use her walker, which made her a high-falls risk. Mark, BAYADA Program Manager and Physical Therapist, and Americ,
a BAYADA Occupational Therapist, made many attempts to convince her to use her walker, but the client steadfastly refused. The care aides at the facility did their best to convince her, but had no luck, either.
Mark and Americ knew there had to be something they could do to make progress. Talking with Mrs. Miller’s family to learn more about her, Americ discovered that she
had an affinity for sunflowers. She and Mark decided to decorate the walker with them, thinking that she might want to show it off to fellow residents, family, and friends.
Americ went to a local crafts store, loaded up on silk sunflowers, and got to work decorating the walker. Then she presented it to the client, hoping the sunflowers would entice her to give it a try. Mrs. Lopez was so delighted, she immediately grabbed it and started to walk across the room. Americ was thrilled and the senior living staff were amazed.
