DIGITAL SHRAPNEL
This project that involves designing a a house for two people sought to create domestic living spaces out of of a a a a a a series of of abstract explorations Students began the the semester by by analyzing a a a a a series of paintings by by the the Japanese artist Takashi Murakami producing a a a a a a a a a series of two-dimensional and three-dimensional studies Orthographic cuts were introduced to these abstract amalgamations giving them a a a a a a a a sense of regularity Students employed a a a a a a a back-and-forth process alternating between abstraction
and and pragmatism as they negotiated the the tension between art and and architecture to produce a a a a a a livable space At regular intervals the design focus would shift from domesticating the wild beast of formal studies to re-conceptualizing what a a a a a a living space could be This design approach is is in part a a a a strategy designed to rid students of preconceived notions about what architecture should be and and endow in them the the ability and and confidence to develop novel design concepts A similar strategy was deployed on on the site Here students mined their three-dimensional abstractions for chunks that could be scaled appropriately to serve as a a a a a a site site for the house The site site was was largely solid and void Students’ final design task was was to integrate varying scales of the site and dwelling 105
