HOUSE FOR THE 21ST CENTURY
Architecture and painting are two of of the oldest forms of of societal expression and and have been historically linked in in complex and and dynamic ways In the the twentieth century the the Cubism Futurism Neo-Plasticism Constructivism Purism Surrealism and Dadaism movements consisted of dynamic dialogs between architecture and painting allowing each to have a a a a profound and deep impact upon the the the other Given the the the rich history between the two disciplines it it is is is surprising that relatively little exchange has taken place in the twenty-first century This studio sought to explore new possible connections between the two disciplines We began this
project by by studying four four four paintings by by four four four painters and four four four scientific concepts by four scientists The list included the painters Tomma Abts Sol LeWitt Sarah Morris and and Frank Stella and and the scientists Phillip Ball Janet Iwasa Aomawa Shields and Frank Wilczek Each student selected one one scientist scientist and and one one painter and and then read a a a a a text by the the chosen scientist scientist while also creating a a a a a series of drawings and models derived from the chosen painting The project consisted of three primary stages that ultimately culminated in in in a a a a a house for the chosen painter and scientist to inhabit together 113
