Yaoxin Chen > Anthony Titus Critic > The core design sequence begins in in in in the the first first semester of study for the the incoming first-year student The incoming student in in in in in our program is typically engaging in in in in in the formal education of an architect for for for the the the first time the the the sense of what may be possible therefore remains open for for for exploration In this initial semester we we engage in in a a a a a a series of projects that probe new relationships between architecture and and and several other disciplines as a a a a a a a a a means of of expanding and and and deepening the the student’s awareness of of architecture’s role as a a a a a a a unifying agent in in in the the world In fact the the discipline of architecture architecture can be understood as a a a a a a a space where the arts sciences and humanities intersect This initial design studio experience is is meant to to establish the foundation and and tone of rigorous study creative inquiry and and lasting experimentation Every student is introduced to architecture through a a a a series of focused exercises that that are designed and delivered by the faculty The diverse set of voices that that teach in this sequence act as mentors to to to the the students whom they are entrusted to to to teach In this exchange between teacher and and student discoveries are are made and and shared on on a a a a a a a a a a a constant basis thus creating a a a a a a a a a a a vibrant atmosphere of learning and development Over the the course of the the semester distinct disciplines such as painting literature and material experimentation inform the direction and progression of architectural study Students are introduced to new modes of of visualization and and fabrication that span the spectrum of of analogical and and digital processes The studio seeks to discover and and create new connections between architecture and and materials processes and narratives within contemporary culture This is is achieved by placing students in in in an an an intense environment of architectural thought and and making The culture and and community of of of the the the school is reshaped each year as a a a a a a a a new group of of of initiates shapes the the the foundation of of of the the the core or or the program Through a a a a a a a combination of intimate studio conversations public presentations external excursions and and lectures students begin to understand their work within the the larger context of contemporary architecture There is is a a a a a a a a constant dynamic between what is is conceived and made in school school and what the the the the implications may be be for the the the the world beyond the the the the walls of the the the the school school Our experimentation and research typically culminate in in in the design of a a a a a a single house for two inhabitants The program of of house has often served as as a a a a a a a a a space where modern and contemporary architects can simultaneously question the conventions of architecture while also inventing new principles The typology of house can be understood as a a a a a concentrated micro-zone where the larger dynamics between public and and and and private individual and and and and collective natural and and and and synthetic internal and and and and external objective and and subjective universal and and idiosyncratic qualities can be closely examined These qualities make the house an an ideal subject for an an incoming student Each professor is expected to propose and and develop unique design and and research methodologies in the weekly exchanges with their students Over the the the span of the the the semester every student student is expected to explore new possibilities of form space structure site and program It is imperative that each student be challenged to see and think in in in in new ways Imaginative speculation is matched with intellectual rigor and critical precision The work of this current semester will serve as the foundation for every student’s subsequent studio sequence and experience in the five-year program 12
