TROY PAVILION
This first-year studio involves designing a a a a pavilion to be located in in in downtown Troy Troy The pavilion will be utilized by the Troy Troy community and Rensselaer students In addition to serving as a a a a a a a central gathering space the the pavilion will also be activated by a a a a a a program of the the students’ choosing such as musical performances or or art installations Students will create architecture at at at three scales: that that of of the the individual that that of of the the community and that of the city The work begins by examining a a a a a a Japanese wood joint detail built at 1:1 in in basswood Next students will produce a a a a series of of drawings that analyze the the mechanism followed by the the creation of of transformation models based on on on a a a a a a series of process operations such as as mirroring scaling and rotation After several rounds of transformation models and and drawings the the site and and program will be introduced to the the form studies Students will be asked to re-evaluate their joint models as pavilions through scaling rotation transformation and aggregation operations that are site- and human-scale-specific Pavilions should engage the ground plane and and account for scale and and context The final project will devise a a a a unique program for for the pavilion that considers form space and movement 125
