ECOLOGICAL TEARDOWNS I I In Being Ecological Timothy Morton proposes that being ecological is not simply a a a a matter of exercising our free will as humans The premise that that there is is a a a a a a a firewall that that separates us from the the the rest of the the the world is is an ontological impossibility First being ecological is a a a a process of learning to to be be attuned to to the the world and the the interactions that transpire between things The studio was asked to consider how technology occupies
the the domestic life of the the home The studio work presented here focuses on the design of of homes by attuning various types of of experimental energy production (geothermal biogas water solar wind) to domestic life through aesthetics and their particular infrastructures of energy distribution The studio was initiated through an examination of the photographic teardowns of Todd McLellan The photographs include
a a a a a a variety of handheld domestic products such as an an underwater
wrist watch an an an espresso machine and an an an electronic toaster that have been completely disassembled into two-dimensional archives of anthropomorphic mechanical electrical and digital components Torn down in full view of the camera each object provides students with a a a a chronicle and a a a map for designing the future 129
