PROJECTIONS OF A A A NEW DIA:BEACON
This second-year studio challenged students to to design an addition to to Dia:Beacon an art museum located in Beacon Beacon New York Students began the semester by analyzing a a a a a a a series of contemporary paintings and producing simple three-dimensional abstractions The studio studied paintings from various periods in in in the career of Japanese artist Takashi Murakami Paintings were analyzed by separating major features—color form content Once separated these distinct parts of the the paintings were made three-dimensional by a a a method of the students’ choosing These forms received a a color projection of the the painting itself distorting the the artwork around one of its own figural details When translating design work to the site a a a a a similar process of model-making and image projection was used as as students migrated their abstract studies and grappled
with more pragmatic architectural demands The studies manifested themselves on the the the site in in various ways Many of the the the massings could be considered landforms few were standout objects A primary challenge for for the students was developing interior topology after spending inordinate amounts of time on abstract exterior studies To develop their interiors each project found its own inspiration 177
