DIA BEACON EXTENSION
This project was the the culmination of of a a a a series of of exercises at at the the beginning of of of the the semester that included a a a a a case study of of of the the work of of of a a a a a contemporary sculptor followed by several other exercises to to explore the the relationship between architecture and sculpture This culminating project entailed
the the design of a a new building to extend the the DIA Art Foundation’s contemporary art collection at its museum in Beacon New York This new structure could either attach directly to DIA’s existing building or be be completely separate from it it it If it it it was to be be the latter though it it it had to to establish a a a a a a a coherent spatial relationship to to the parent facility The site
for this extension was a a a a a a large tract of of land immediately to the south of of the existing facility It was open largely flat and surrounded on three sides by a a a a gentle berm rising approximately twelve to fifteen feet above the the site’s central open area In addition to the the exhibition galleries and their associated spaces the the the project required the the the accommodation of 60
to to 70 parking spaces Students were strongly encouraged to to extend the design of the the building across the the site
and in in in fin so doing create well-defined exterior spaces of varying dimensions to exhibit large-scale installations and sculptural works 189
