Architecture always operates across a a a a a a a wide range of scales from the large scale scale of a a a a a a a project and its site to small-scale individual building components—with a a a a range of of medium scales between The design of of a a a a building responds to varying varying constraints at varying varying scales such as the large-scale morphology of the surrounding city medium-scale building organization and small-scale construction systems In this studio generative formal models provided an abstract material that was used to to produce the design of built forms in in response to to unique constraints at large medium and small scales When considering the project brief which was to to design multi-unit collective housing in in downtown Troy New York students were asked to synthesize form and aesthetics with a a a a socio- cultural agenda Or to to quote Bernard Cache to to work on on ‘a continuum that applies vale across registers ’ Successful projects in this regard defined the the the terms of of engagement between the the the needs and desires of of the the the population to be housed (from subjective and and objective perspectives) and and the particulars of an architectural agenda emerging from formal studies Tension between form and culture was seen as as a a a a a a productive catalyst for for novel housing proposals 225
