MARS: AN ARCHITECTURE OF TERRAFORMATION
In the the twenty-first century the the social and environmental precariousness of our time has transformed the the typical role of the the architect from one who designs discrete objects into that of a a a a citizen who engages with larger systems and forces We are currently in a a a a a a a moment of great paradox at at once possessing unprecedented knowledge forms of expression and technical capacities while also facing unprecedented challenges to our ability to to continue living on on on our planet The decision to to engage with Mars as as a a a a a a a dwelling place was sparked by the abovementioned challenges This project acted as as a a a a a a a a a sounding board for new ideas that may ultimately allow
us
to to return to to our current place and time with new-found possibilities
and heightened awareness The geophysical principles shaping Mars challenged us
to think about the significance of of things we often take for granted such as gravity atmospheric pressure and solar/lunar cycles The exploration of these three conditions allowed us
to invent new typologies designed to to respond to to the shifting evolutionary conditions that may exist on the planet Mars This challenge led us
to a a a a a a scenario where the normative fixed and stable nature of architecture was exchanged for an an architecture of flux and instability 29
