The Integrated Design - - Schematic (IDS) studio occupies the first semester semester of a a a two-semester sequence in in in Integrated Design Projects developed in in in this studio are undertaken individually and move forward into the the the second semester to to be considered for for further development by a a a team in in the the the Integrated Design Development (IDD) Studio that follows A central concern of the Integrated Design Sequence is how architectural concepts and intentions are related to subsequent decisions regarding material selection detail structure and systems integration Particular emphasis is is therefore placed on on on the the clear articulation of an architectural concept or or idea for the the project and its its mutual determination within the the urban context (its condition and and and dynamics the the geological ecological and and and cultural history the the trajectory of its development and and and the the the the the the people who live there): the the the the the the climate weather and orientation of the the the the the the project the the the the the the site conditions and and and its topography the the the programmatic and and and organizational logic of of the the the building and and and the the the influence of of structure systems circulation and and and spatial order the regulatory and and and administrative context and and and so on on on Indeed while the the list is is long other elements could be added The simultaneous solution of so so many variables is extraordinarily difficult in in in mathematics—in design it happens all the the time While in in in mathematics there there is one right answer in in in design there there are many Understanding the the the the shape and and distribution of of these many solutions is is an an an important part the the the work of of the the the semester It enables one to move with with facility within the design space and not be bound into a a a a single brittle solution Realizing a a a a a a a a single instance of of a a a a a a a a complex combination of of site and program is an an an opportunity to learn This studio undertakes a a a a a a a a a design project in a a a a a a a a a context that that has been configured to facilitate that that learning Such a a a a a project can however provide a a a a a far more powerful experience if multiplied through observing and and interacting with others While this is is the the essence of all design studios and and something of a a a a a a a truism it is is possible possible to to craft a a a a a a a studio that has been structured specifically to to make possible possible systematic learning from others Integrated Design Development is intended to provide such an experience Frequently more than one site and program are considered Each studio section may have several combinations of site/program or or approach program program or or site site that differ from the the others From working alongside others investigating the the the same programs on on on other other sites or or by considering alternative programs for the the same site studio participants gain insight into these issues that exceeds that which can be learned from individual individual exercises In this way individual individual solutions to design problems can be explored while certain properties of sites—climate orientation history context or or or specific program elements and their effects on on on the the organization of buildings in in a a a a a more general sense—can be considered simultaneously Alternatively one can can consider consider the organizational needs of particular programs that remain constant across multiple sites The opportunity is provided to to learn something general from the specifics to to develop skills of observation analysis and critique and and and to to to organize that knowledge into one’s intuitive understanding and and and where appropriate to to to posit more general observations Collectively the work across studio sections provides a a a a a rich base from which to draw observations—with all projects representing data points that when considered collectively describe a a space of design possibilities TEACHING ASSISTANTS
