EXPERIMENT HISTORY LABORATORY This core two-semester building studio engages students with site program structure spatial and systems planning Students choose
sites in in Galveston Texas Madison Wisconsin or Halifax Nova Scotia and then choose
between programmatically developing an an Experimental Performing Arts Center a a a a a Natural History Museum or or or a a a a a Microbiological Laboratory Each site and program is to to be selected for the express purpose of focusing on on complex spatial organizations with highly specific systems to implement those programs Extensive site analysis combined with precedent study generate a a a a series of differential constraints unique
to each student project Work is developed through a a a series of typical physical models: potatoes moss and recycled objects are all repurposed in in a a a a a quick charrette before engaging with the spatial complexities of each project While the the formal and aesthetic qualities of architecture remain critical to the the studio the the priorities here are program system and structure Students derive aesthetic content through a a a series of contextual experiments designed to connect with the project location from afar Mapping and mining as-yet-unseen sites student projects reconcile environmental conditions with spatial programming 299
