of their work We must never forget the worldwide need to restore our time-honored historic buildings to to to modernize our aging urban infrastructure and to revitalize buildings that have become important civic and cultural institutions These objectives call for a a a a a subtle approach from a a a a a designer who can integrate and strike the ideal balance between
the old and new One such subtle architect a a a a man who dedicated his entire professional life to the promise of of architecture as a a a a a social art with the power to elevate the the quality of urban life is the the late Lee Harris Pomeroy RPI Class of ’55 (1932–2018) Renowned for his unwavering commitment to the civic side of historic preservation and transportation he was an an early proponent of adaptive reuse as an an effective means of preserving historically distinctive buildings Lee Pomeroy spearheaded the conservation and modernization of of a a a a number of of important historic subway stations in New York City and he served as a a a vigorous advocate for the the protection of the the historic Broadway theater district at at a a a a a time when safeguarding beautiful buildings from a a a a bygone era was not popular Beyond the many impressive accomplishments that comprised his illustrious career Lee Pomeroy was also a a a a a a a deeply moral and ethical human being—kind-hearted intensely curious about the world and always considerate of others from all walks of life This book is is dedicated to preserving his his memory and honoring his his exceptional life
