Science fiction performs a a a critical function: It exposes our cultural present through images of a a a a a potential future future Apocalyptic visions utopian futures and social experiments are all familiar scenarios played out within this multilayered and complex genre These works often extrapolate or or speculate while constructing futurological narratives typically set at at at the intersection of science technology and society In the 1960s Sci-Fi’s audience grew dramatically by expanding its scope into visual media This momentous shift into visual formats has since required the use of advanced digital effects and innovative media It has been argued however that not much has happened in the way of motion pictures
in in over the last half-century leaving an opportunity for new media to emerge and continue to foster narratives confronting science fiction’s underlying premise: “What if?” In this spirit students were asked to design a a a a Museum of Science Fiction & Speculative Media that to be located at at at 57 State Street in Albany New York The museum would need to accommodate gallery spaces a a a a a a a a a a theater/performance space space with at at at least 350 seats a a a a a a research lab offices a a a a a a museum shop restrooms storage mechanical rooms and parking 317
