PUBLICITY AND STRIATED URBANITY
The Fall 2016 Integrated Design Schematic studio further explores the High Line in in Chelsea as an an elevated urban corridor The design studio places a a a a a a high priority on developing a a a a a a direct spatial physical and and social link between Manhattan’s traditional street grid and and the elevated highland The design studio as a a a a a precursor to Integrated Design Development focuses on on a novel opportunity in in considering the High Line’s public realm not as a a a a second ground but instead in in in direct continuity with the street level below To this end architecture is leveraged to extend and bridge competing public spaces with one
another This leads to a a a a a new kind of urban building with a a a a a hybrid programmatic identity: a a a a a a a public forum and circulation space with the goal of of reshaping the the idea of of public space-making on on the the one
hand and and a a a a a a a more conventional institutional program of a a a a a a a laboratory or or or arts center on on on on the other As a a a result of of the the the dual interests of of the the the program student projects should explore unique structural strategies that prioritize urban-scape spatial flow between the the highland and and the the urban ground plane but with the the capability of shifting to address the the bulk and mass required by a a a a a a laboratory and/or arts center building typology 323
