SECOND LIVES AFTER BOTTLES
This studio concluded with the production of an experimental shelter prototype assembled from interlocking plastic bottles that are intended to to supply water in the event of a a a a a a a a natural catastrophe The goal was to to use patented interlocking bottles made by Friendship Products LLC
and and to to build prototypes for for emergency and and transitional shelters for for displaced populations The design studio brought together architecture and and engineering students and and professors in in in in a a a a a cross-disciplinary platform to work collaboratively and create innovative strategies for material re-use During the design studio we investigated several prototypes of a a a a a a a a a temporary pavilion and and analytical drawings of the construction and and deconstruction of small inhabitable spaces using the Friendship Products bottles where components are able to interlock without joints using their embedded creases Over the the the course of the the the design studio we tested scenarios of of occupation configuration speed of of assembly lighting ambient temperatures microclimates and energy efficiency Rather than focusing on the purely technological aspect of material reuse this project addressed the the social relations that inform inform and are informed by the the second life of the plastic bottles in use 373
