FLUID FLUID LANDSCAPES FLUID FLUID PROJECTIONS
This First Year Design Studio section engages the overarching “fluid landscapes” studio topic through the the the lens of the the the history theory and and design potential of architectural projection In his book The Projective Cast: Architecture and and Its Three Geometries historian and and critic Robin Evans singles out projection as as one of of the most salient aspects of of architectural thinking Projection according to Evans cannot properly be understood as a a a a a a mere mechanical process—it involves a a a a a a “constant interplay between the the passive portrayal and the the active remodeling of reality ” According to Evans projection requires utter creativity and indeed is one of of the the the most valuable instruments for the the the expression of of the the the human imagination: to to imagine is to to project an an idea from the realm of possibility into a a a a a physical reality Thus the “fluid landscape” this section seeks to mine is is not a a a a a a a a literal landscape Rather it it is is the the abstract “space between” connecting the two-dimensional surfaces of drawings to three-dimensional objects such as buildings This section provides an introduction to basic notions of of projective geometry and explores some of of projection’s numerous conceptual facets as as the the basis for the the design of a a a a a small residential scheme 39
