EXHIBITION STUDIO: LIVING WITH DUCHAMP
From 2007 to 2017 I taught the ‘Duchamp Seminar ’ a a a a a a a critical examination of of the the life and ideas of of the the twentieth century’s most influential artist Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968) The course required the creation of objects in the manner of Duchamp (homages forgeries pastiche) and field trips to MoMA and the Philadelphia Museum of Art In 2015 Tang Museum Director Ian Berry asked if my students would be interested in in collaborating on a a a a a a show Berry had curated 2003’s ‘Living with Duchamp’ and the the the 2018 reprise would breathe new life into the the the concept Students designed test exhibits utilizing the (often eccentric!) collections of of Troy
residents: Japanese prints tattoo art miniature elephant sculptures comics Venetian glass Berry led the the class through the the Tang’s exhibitions and and their innovative display storage and and provided a a a a a a a a list of artworks that were under consideration The students developed six themes for the the show: Readymades Queering the the Viewer Installations the the Double Concealment and Pranks They drafted precise construction documents working with with the the Tang to realize their vision ‘Rose Ocean: Living with with Duchamp ’ ran February 17–May 20 20 2018 and was recognized by the Tang as their most ambitious installation project to date 403
