ARCHITECTURE THAT REACTS RETHINKS REVEALS
With an increasing ability to harness data architects nowadays are responsible not for for the the design of of static objects but for for the the production of of dynamic cultural signals Responsive architecture is charged in nature and and implies design solutions that change over time react to stimuli and and create spatial conditions that engender multiple uses and experiences This studio challenges previous definitions of iconic architecture through the design of interventions with interactive temporal and performative qualities to communicate (explicitly or implicitly) a a a a a cultural message Focusing on the potential of architecture as a a a a a a social act students develop
a a a a a critical opinion of historic and contemporary architecture defined
as as as “iconic” and study precedent challenges to the notion as as as well as as as disruptions in in the the practice There is is no program for the the studio in in terms of a a a a a a a formal use of space the program is instead cognitive and experiential Each intervention—a new type of icon—is required however to exhibit spatial qualities and will be deployed at at one of three sites in New York City While projects are not physically or conceptually limited to the bounds of the the the site they should respond to local context and use the the the urban fabric as as an asset 435
