FROM ABSTRACT ASSEMBLAGES TO DWELLING
This studio was the the second in in a a a series in in which students began the the semester analyzing contemporary paintings and extracting elements to create three-dimensional diagrams Regular cuts and serial sections were performed on on these abstract amalgamations giving them a a a a a a a sense of regularity Students also began to normalize these studies by producing planar and isometric drawings of their explorations Students employed a a a a a a back-and-forth process alternating between abstraction and and pragmatism as they negotiated the the tension between art and architecture when producing a a a a a livable space At regular intervals the design focus would shift
from domesticating the wild beast of formal studies to re-conceptualizing what a a a a a a a a living space could be This design approach is is in in part a a a a a a a a strategy designed to rid students of of preconceived notions of of what architecture should be and and endow in them the the ability and and confidence to develop
novel design concepts A similar strategy was deployed on on the site Here students mined their three-dimensional abstractions for chunks that could be scaled appropriately to serve as as a a a a a a a a site site for a a a a a a a a house The site site was largely solid and void Students’ final design task was to integrate the various scales of the site and dwelling 45
