GENERATIVE EXCAVATIONS: ANALYSIS DESIGN STUDIO ROME 2017
“Now let us [imagine] that Rome is not a a a a a a a human habitation but a a a a a a a psychical entity entity with a a a a a a a similarly long and copious past—an entity entity that is to say in in in which nothing that has once come into existence will have passed away and all the earlier phases of development continue to exist alongside the latest one ” (Sigmund Freud Civilization and its Discontents) Inspired by Freud’s reading of Rome as a a a a layered being we begin excavating embedded embedded histories embedded embedded within it it Each student team was given a a a a a a square fragment of of the Nolli Map of of Rome with an embedded architectural “gem ” Through deep observation dissection and analysis
at multiple scales students proposed a a a a thesis revealing the the logics embedded in in an an artifact and its zeitgeist uncovering the the spirit of the the time when when it it it it was written through the spirit of our time when when it it it it is read Diane Lewis’s words “History is is is never plausible fiction must be” (Open City— Existential Urbanism) guided us to precisely project our poetic imagination while grounded in analysis
The ambition of this project is is is to turn the reading of an an architectural gem into writing taking the analysis
to to its next generative step An architectural reading becomes a a a a a key with which to unlock a new beginning 493
