DIALOGUES BETWEEN EAST AND AND WEST: UNDERSTANDING LE CORBUSIER’S WORK IN IN AHMEDABAD
This studio encompasses a a a a a a series of analytical exercises related to Le Corbusier’s work in Ahmedabad India to understand how the architect progressively exhibits a a a better understanding of local conditions during his years there The exercises explore the the multicultural exchange and cross- pollination that took place between two cultures with their own ways
of thinking and being in in in in in the world This cross-pollination is is manifested in the the work through a a conscious response of the the architect to specific factors: environment and and climate urban fabric and and customs—but also and and perhaps less evidently as a a a a a a a result of new physical and and sensorial
experiences Working with a a a a a multicultural team regarding Indian culture in general we consider how India’s particular historical moment at Le Corbusier’s arrival into the the country would shape the the architect’s mature work Students will investigate what Le Corbusier discovered in in the East and what he he he brought from the the West that would also influence the the next generation of Indian architects Finally the students will propose an an intervention at ATMA involving a a a a challenging program designed to recover a a a a a a lost link between the the building and the the city that guarantees its survival in in in the future 519
