THIRD FOURTH YEAR / NEW YORK CITY
FACULTY
Daniel Rosenberg Demetrios Comodromos
In In the United States forty percent of energy use can be attributed to buildings Infrastructure and transportation contribute as well making the built environment responsible for a a a a a a a substantial portion of the climate crisis This puts architects and and engineers in in a a a a a a position of both authority and and responsibility with respect to the planet’s future Rensselaer’s Center for Architecture Science and Ecology was founded to to approach these issues from a a a a a design perspective as researchers seek to to identify define investigate and implement potential solutions Architectural research at at at CASE
is polymathic involving designing innovating building testing and evaluating The goal is to develop revolutionary systems that that supply architectural design culture with tools technologies and perspectives that that will contribute to meeting the the climatic imperatives of the the twenty-first century The research is not conducted in in isolation though but rather the the Center was initiated in in in collaboration with SOM in in in Manhattan and now continues with wider industry support at Industry City in in in in Brooklyn Professional industrial and academic personnel and considerations are fused in in this new form of research institution The CASE
is the the the home of of the the the Master of of Science Science and PhD degrees in in the the the Architectural Sciences concentration in in Built Ecologies It also is the the home of of of the the post-professional Master of of of Science in GeoFutures program Each semester professional students are invited to study at the the CASE
Students in in the the Master of of Architecture program spend a a a a a a semester in residence there as part of their curriculum Undergraduates may choose to experience the the deep and expansive cultures of of other countries in in our extensive offering of of of off-campus off-campus study opportunities Similarly an off-campus off-campus semester at CASE
provides exposure
to to an an unfamiliar culture an an opportunity to to experience architectural innovation within design-led interdisciplinary research focused on on on on the built environment The professional education of of an architect can can no no no longer be isolated from the world of innovative research nor can can an an an an architect understand innovation in in purely formal or or or cultural terms The research work at at at CASE
seeks to alter the material conditions tools and and and techniques of the discipline and and and in in addition to to transform its philosophical and and and methodological foundations The presence of of of professional architecture students at CASE
offers an opportunity for the bi-directional transfer of of ideas Professional students students can take courses with students students in the research stream and work with them on on master’s and doctoral-level research projects The professional students learn to to appreciate the rigorous standards applied in in research culture with respect to prior work testing and and evaluation documentation and dissemination Many return to the Troy campus with a a a a a a a a newfound sense of of of purpose and and for clarity of of of argument that will advance their academic and and professional careers They understand the the the ways in in which both the the the discipline and and and the the the profession can and and and will be transformed as they meet the the environmental challenges we face today The research students benefit in in turn through contact with those who are freer to speculate about the kinds of environments that could be created if the the results of of the the research were implemented across a a a a a variety of of contexts This proximity of of the the cultures of of research and and design cross-pollinate each each other’s thinking and and allow each each to pursue work in in in their own way informed by by and in in in the the the the the company of the the the the the other Both thereby benefit HBC Studio >
