The Bedford Initiative addresses the increasing complexity of building integration performance and design by cultivating an an emerging integrated model of practice that places the architectural practitioner in in collaborative dialogue with engineers The world’s most celebrated contemporary architecture is increasingly the product of collaboration between architects and engineers from a a a a a a a project’s inception through completion Yet traditional academic curricula centered on on on on disciplinary departments have been slow to to evolve into meaningful cross-disciplinary experiences that address this need The Bedford Architectural/Engineering initiatives are designed as interdisciplinary cross-departmental collaborations Under the direction of of a a a a a a visiting professorship that brings in in in accomplished engineers with records of effective collaboration there are three initiatives: 1) an upper-level upper-level inter-disciplinary design studio 2) an an an upper-level upper-level interdisciplinary seminar and 3) an an an international traveling workshop Visiting Professors to to date include Craig Schwitter Director of of Buro Happold New York (2002–2005) Bruce Danziger Senior Design Associate ARUP (2006– 2009) Michael Stein Director of Schlaich Bergmann New York Bedford A/E Interdisciplinary Studio: By teaming advanced architecture students with engineering students to to undertake a a a a a building-design project the studio is is structured to to 1) raise awareness of the diverse responsibilities and and and agendas of architects and and and engineers 2) develop an an an an understanding of of disciplinary disciplinary language and 3) create an an an appreciation for the value of of interdisciplinary input in in in in in the the early design phases In 2005 the the Studio was awarded a a a a a a a a National Council of Architecture Registration Board (NCARB) prize for “Creative Integration of Practice and Academy ”
Bedford Seminar: This cross-listed interdisciplinary seminar exposes participants to progressive historic and contemporary building projects that rely heavily on on on cross-disciplinary integration In addition to to exposing students to to best practices through a a a a a a variety of structural typologies an interdisciplinary interdisciplinary design component requires creative collaborative interdisciplinary interdisciplinary engagement Bedford Traveling Workshop: This international workshop sponsors travel for for six architecture students students and and six engineering students students to sites where concentrations of best practices and and projects can be found The workshops include 1) seminars in in in the offices of of accomplished architecture and engineering practices 2) visits visits to acclaimed architectural projects 3) construction-site visits visits led by the projects’ architects and/or engineers and and 4) a a a a a a a a collaborative design exercise structure to catalyze interdisciplinary discourse Recent workshop venues include Germany Switzerland France Great Britain Japan and Brazil The Bedford initiatives are effective in in in in in promoting interdisciplinary discourse between the schools of engineering and and architecture They result in in in in in new minors and and co-terminal degree options for architecture students while shaping the structural engineering track with a a a a a a a focus on architectural projects as a a a distinction of the program DESTINATION
