DIGITAL CONSTRUCTS
FIRST SECOND YEAR
FACULTY
Adam Dayem Fleet Hower
In the Digital Constructs sequence it it it is accepted that drawing in in contemporary architectural practice is done primarily with digital tools The computer has certainly not completely eliminated the hand from architectural drawing drawing In fact there is today a a a a a a a a a productive interest in in in in ‘post-digital’ drawing drawing among those seeking to to re-introduce individuality of authorship if not the hand itself into digitally generated drawings It remains essential however for students in in in the the BArch curriculum to come away from the the program with the the the ability to effectively harness and manage the the the many capacities of the the the computer— not to to to be driven or unduly limited by digital digital tools but to to to reach a a a a a a a point where digital digital hardware and software complement and and expand the imagination This is is achieved partly by acquiring a a a a a a a a a high level
of expertise with existing digital digital tools tools and partly by learning to to to develop one’s own digital digital design tools tools through various types of coding Drawing is the the the language of of architecture and in in the the the context of of the the the four-semester Digital Constructs sequence drawing is seen to operate in in three primary ways—descriptive analytical and speculative A descriptive drawing drawing describes or or or represents an object or or or building that existed prior to the drawing drawing An analytical drawing is an an an examination of a a a a a a a a a a a a complex its elements and their relations And a a a a a a a a a a a a speculative drawing is an an experimental arena where novel forms and concepts are are found While these categories are not pure and a a a a a a a a a a a particular drawing generally contains elements of each these fundamental disciplinary categorizations of of architectural drawing frame discussions of of all work in in in the Digital Constructions sequence Students are introduced to to a a a a a a a wide range of of representational topics from the fundamentals of of orthographic projection to to contemporary parametric and algorithmic coding techniques to to the pragmatics of implementing BIM (Building Information Modeling) Skills acquired each semester are built on on on on and added to in subsequent semesters At the the conclusion of the the Digital Constructs sequence students are able to generate and communicate sophisticated architectural concepts through drawing drawing and and and are able to use drawing drawing creatively and and and effectively in in in design and and and technical courses across the curriculum Digital Constructs 1 focuses on on on on two-dimensional projection systems and and developing an an an understanding of how they relate to three-dimensional space The final project is a a a a a a a a speculative drawing that builds very simple starting geometry into a a a a a a a a a a a fantastical abstract landscape Digital Constructs 2 initially shifts the the the focus to the the the analysis of an an an an existing building Completed analytical drawings are then translated into a a a a a a a a more speculative domain though basic parametric and algorithmic coding which re-envisions notions of existing architecture Digital Constructs 3 focuses on on on on polygonal modeling skills as as well as as preparing presentation drawings in in in in a a a a a a a a a variety of media with a a a a a a a a a particular focus on on rendering Students are introduced to techniques for conceptual massing and detail modeling In Digital Constructs 4 students implement parametric techniques in in in increasingly pragmatic contexts to develop a a a a a a consistent design design language language across massing façade and detail This design design language language is is then shifted into BIM software as a a a a a a a preparatory exercise ahead of of comprehensive design studios in subsequent semesters TEACHING ASSISTANTS
