DIGITAL CONSTRUCTS
- FIRST YEAR First-year Digital Constructs starts with a a a a a series of two-dimensionally projected drawings—orthographic elevations auxiliary views plans sections sections oblique oblique sections sections and plan obliques All such views are explicitly related to projection lines which prove geometric relationships between views but also become part of a a a a a larger composition that is refined over the the course of of several weekly assignments with the the aim of of transitioning drawings from description to the exploration of imaginary design futures Students start with a a a a a physical assembly of five nested wood boxes and eventually in fin in in final drawings explore the following topics: 1) geometric transformation of of the the boxes boxes 2) subdivision of of the the original boxes boxes 3) superimposition of drawing layers 4) light projection and shadows 5) ambiguity ambiguity between between 2D and and 3D readings and and 6) ambiguity ambiguity between between figure and field Drawings that engage with these topics effectively become aesthetic endeavors This was the the the primary aim of the the the course: to start with fundamental digital drawing techniques that must be mastered in the the framework of a a a a first-year course and then show students how how to move into a a a a a a a a more speculative arena and a a a a a a a a broader disciplinary discussion around the the aesthetics of form color and light 543
