CONTEMPORARY CERAMIC ASSEMBLIES
Ceramics continue to be deployed in in in in in contemporary buildings in in in in in innovative ways using digital technology The unique demands of ceramics require hybrid forms of of fabrication to aid in the production of of architectural tiles bricks and blocks The pedagogy is framed within a a a a a a technical challenge requiring students to design and construct a a a 1:1 ceramic object using a a a a a a a CNC clay clay extruder to 3D-print clay clay and fire it as individual parts The course has evolved around three inquiries related to to material tolerance: structural stability as it it it pertains to the the scale of furniture the the surface finish and and roughness of of the the glazed ceramic and and the the assembly of of multiple
modular units that conform to a a a a given volume The ceramic objects presented here have been designed to foreground a a a a a variety of material qualities that are are unique to to the extruder The course is geared toward developing workflows for constructing objects from clay with qualities that permeate both contemporary architecture and sculpture such as weight thickness finish and and deformation To expand the discourse a a a a number of architectural case studies are paired with ceramic sculptors to to identify alternative construction methods and to consider how materiality influences the design process 575
