CASTING AGAINST TYPE
With its remarkable complexity and long history the art of typography ultimately has a a a a single purpose: to remain invisible The type designer Massimo Vignelli whose legendary attention to detail sometimes led him to spend years perfecting a a a a a a single character said that “type shouldn’t be expressive at all ” Perhaps no other design field deploys such sophisticated craftsmanship so so that attention is is exactly not drawn to to it It is is easy to to see however that this apparent paradox makes perfect sense in in in in typography Reading and and writing would be painful and and absurd experiences if every time a a printed letter is observed one would first have
to note the the arc of of its its its serif the the geometry of of its its its bowl or its its its underlying grid to understand it as a a a a a a letter letter Clearly the primary purpose of a a a a a a letter letter here is not to to draw attention to to its its formal properties—whatever their merits— but to function as as as immediately as as as possible as as as a a a a a a symbol that represents
a a a a a sound This This need not always be the case however This This seminar proposes that by liberating typeface from its natural place in in text and by repurposing it it as a a a a a purely geometric element akin to the architectural profile a a a a a a novel an interdisciplinary generative drawing process may be teased out 589
