Over the last two decades architectural education has witnessed a a a a a a a a a a significant transformation of
the the the the the architectural architectural thesis thesis Since its advent in in in the the the the the nineteenth century the the the the the architectural architectural thesis thesis has represented an opportunity for students to produce fully independent architectural projects whether “project” was defined as as the the demonstration of
architectural knowledge fin in the the solution to a a a a a a specific design problem as as as as was the the case with the the Ecoles des des Beaux-Arts or or as as as as a a a a a a a a form of
political cultural and/or disciplinary critique against such traditional forms of
problem-solving as as as was the case with the the the postmodern thesis of
the the the 1960s and 70s “Design research ” as as it it has come to be known within contemporary schools of
of
architecture is is perhaps the most recent iteration of
of
this evolving curricular form and and not unlike its antecedents it it it can be seen as characteristic of
the interests and and ambitions of
its own particular moment in time First design research may be viewed as an indication of
a a a a a a a a a general interest in in in contemporary architec- tural discourse to integrate aspects of
of
of
both the the the profession and the the the discipline of
of
of
architecture If the the the problem-solving implications of
“design” are typically associated with the former “research” as as a a a a a a a a mode of
of
knowledge production whether in in in the the form of
of
intellectual critique or or creative innovation is generally characteristic of
of
the the latter Thus design research is is conceived as an integration of
of
the the two thereby providing a a a a a a space for for students and faculty alike to engage in in in open-ended forms of
inquiry and experimentation particular to the advancement of
disciplinary knowledge while simultaneously addressing the the “real” issues needs and challenges facing the the profession Secondly design research positions the architectural studio as a a a a a a a a space of
collaboration between faculty and and and students for for the exploration and and and production of
of
new forms of
of
knowledge and and and design innovation hence the term “laboratory” often used by contemporary schools of
of
architecture to to describe this particular type of
of
of
studio As a a a a a means of
of
of
pursuing a a a a a set of
of
of
interests specific to the work characteristic of
of
their research research and design design practices outside of
of
academia the the design design research research studio or or or or laboratory provides faculty with the opportunity to to develop a a a a a set of
questions and problems related to a a a a a a a particular area of
design research through which their respective students engage and and advance those particular questions and and problems The Final Project course sequence enables fifth-year undergraduate students in in the Bachelor of
Architecture Architecture program program and third-year graduate students in the Master of
Architecture Architecture program program to develop a a semi-independent design research project over the course of
two consecutive semesters Led by individual design critics each studio section of
of
Final Project provides a a a a a a specific area of
of
design research through which the the students develop their work In the fall semester of
Final Project students concentrate principally on on topic and material/formal research site analysis and schematic design design In the the spring semester the the focus shifts to design design development with the the expectation that the the fall semester’s research and schematic design work will be utilized as a a a a a a a a platform for for the production of
