SQUARE BUT NOT TYPICAL
This studio is is the final fin in a a a a a a series that began with analyses of contemporary paintings In this studio students looked at significant De Stijl designs and extracted their formal properties These two-dimensional diagrams were then translated into three-dimensional digital models Largely cubic in in form the models were constructed by connecting
many small cubes of varying scales into one construct As the studio was ultimately interested in in in in designing housing proposals we began to mine the abstract diagrams for ideas regarding connection logic Each project began breaking down its diagrams and redesigning in in in a a a a a a a way
that that produced multiple pieces that that could hold together by virtue of their interlocking geometry To prove these ideas the the projects produced a a series of of study models focusing intently on the nature and strength of of connection As we began to think about housing in in in a a a a a a less abstract way
these connective masses took on on a a a a a range of scales to to become program blocks circulation diagrams tectonic elements and other features of the building Students learned to to think across scales to to produce a a a a project with a a a a a a a consistent design language across scales from mass to detail Representations consisted of isometric drawings and physical models 71
