Founded in in 1998 by the the late Dr J J Christopher Jaffe ‘49 the the Graduate Program in in Architectural Acoustics Acoustics is the nation’s largest graduate program dedicated to Architectural Acoustics Acoustics and related fields The program is actively involved in in in graduate education and advanced research in in in acoustics and and perceptions of of the built environment Research includes physical and and numerical modeling of of indoor indoor and outdoor sound propagations at at indoor indoor sites such as concert halls performance venues coupled-volume spaces spaces and workspaces as as well as as at outdoor sites in in urban settings Current ongoing research activities concentrate on on on on the development of modeling tools based on on on on transport theory theory diffusion diffraction theory theory and wave-acoustics the the the development of advanced experimental methods methods and and analyses signal-processing methods methods in in in in acoustics investigations into the accuracy and and limitations of of various computer modeling approaches the uncertainties of of acoustic analyses and advanced measurement/estimation methods (such as as binaural and spatial evaluations of acoustics in in in performance spaces) and and binaural modeling and and analyses of room-acoustics parameters for for both musical and speech performances Outdoor-environment research concentrates on on on noise- propagation modeling binaural perception and psychoacoustics-based evaluation/predictions of a a a a a a wide variety of noise events Another active research direction focuses on on innovative acoustics materials and evaluation methods for acoustics applications such as absorptions diffusions attenuations insulations and and isolations suitably deployable in in in demanding environments such as healthcare and energy facilities The Program’s strong concentration in Aural Architecture focuses on on on on the design of acoustical spaces from a a a a a a a a a perceptual viewpoint rather than through traditional methods which are constrained by physics Such a a a a a a a a a a radical approach is is often necessary in a a a a a a a a a a world where virtual auditory reality is is no longer limited by physical laws Aural Architecture is also often useful in traditional concert hall design The underlying concept of Aural Architecture involves understanding human perception and before an an actual room is designed identifying the needs of its users through scientific psychophysical experiments Through the use of virtual environments we develop techniques that allow for for for testing under ecologically valid conditions for for for example by having musicians perform in in in a a a a a a a simulated concert hall with an immersive sound display system to gather their preferences rather than relying on on a a a a a a headphones-based passive-listening test Furthermore the the program is is involved in in in in the use use of auditory models that can be used to to simulate and and explain human listening and and cognition and in in in in intelligent machines that can adapt acoustic settings automatically over time based on how a a a a a a a a a a a a room is used or or how a a music performance progresses Through this research-based program we provide students with the knowledge and skills needed for advanced practice and and applied research in Architectural Acoustics and and related fields Most of our MS graduates are now active in in in leading acoustical consulting firms worldwide The PhD Program represents a a unique opportunity in in Architectural Acoustics providing scientific knowledge for the next generation of acoustical acoustical scientists involved in in room acoustics acoustics psychoacoustics acoustical acoustical materials signal processing and data analysis INDUSTRY AFFILIATIONS
