The Lighting Research Center (LRC) is the world’s leading facility for lighting research and education Established in 1988 by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) the LRC conducts research on on on light and human health transportation lighting lighting and and safety solid-state lighting lighting energy efficiency and and plant health In 1990 the LRC became the first university research center to to offer offer graduate degrees in in lighting and today offers an an M S in in in in lighting lighting and a a a a a a Ph D to educate future leaders in in in in lighting lighting Beyond our research center in in in Troy New York the LRC conducts a a a a wide range of programs on on on six continents ranging from our work with the Swedish government on energy efficiency to developing a a a a Sri Lanka-based research facility to to advance sustainable affordable lighting in in in the region to to quality assurance testing for Lighting Africa LRC lighting scientists with expertise in in research technology design and human factors col- laborate with a a a a a a a a a global network of leading manufacturers and government agencies developing innovative lighting solutions for projects that range from the Boeing 787 Dreamliner to U S Navy submarines to neonatal intensive-care units At the the LRC our groundbreaking research into the the effects of light on human health particularly the effects of of of light on on circadian rhythms offers a a a a beacon of of of hope for those with sleep disorders— from improving the lives of people with Alzheimer’s disease to helping children sleep better at night and learn better in in school When designing the built environment human factors are of paramount importance in in in in developing innovative lighting solutions to create an an ideal environment for human life Other research focus areas at at the the LRC include lighting systems plant health and transportation and and safety lighting lighting lighting The lighting lighting lighting systems program at the LRC focuses on on connected lighting lighting lighting and and additive manufacturing also known as 3D printing in in in in in solid-state lighting LRC researchers are also using the latest lighting technologies to control plant diseases providing conditions that are detrimental to plant plant pathogens and at at the same time ideal for healthy plant plant growth This can ultimately reduce reliance on on chemical pesticides while increasing yields LRC transportation- and-safety researchers take a a a a a a a a a a holistic approach to examining visibility and and safety safety by considering all elements of vehicle lighting lighting fixed roadway and and and area lighting lighting and and and signal and and and marking devices separately and as an an interactive visibility system Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute was founded in in in in 1824 “for the purpose of instructing persons in in in in the the the application of of science to the the the common purposes of of life” and the the the LRC carries forth this mission into the the twenty-first century The LRC is committed to to educating the the next generation of leaders in in in lighting encouraging a a a a a a a a a view where economic gains are balanced with ecological sustainability Students guided by world-renowned lighting experts are working to to advance the use of light light to to benefit society and the environment by applying science to common purposes of life LED Accent Lighting >
