 Apprenticeships
Positively, the majority of respondents indicated that they employ apprentices. The majority of these are being offered in; business administration, construction, healthcare and public services, management and professional and engineering.
One organisation that do not employ apprentices stated that there are existing frameworks that meet their needs but they are unable to source training providers willing to deliver in their area. In addition, there are also frameworks available in England but not Wales that would benefit the organisation which they obviously cannot utilise. In addition, a further organisation stated that the WEST assessments which are a mandatory part of an apprenticeship are a barrier to older workers.
The Apprenticeship levy is considered a negative by 6 respondents. For the majority of these organisations the cost is higher than the return they receive, although many state that they are in discussion with providers.
Brexit
Funding and increased costs are a key consideration for organisations aligned to the public services. Procurement, loss of staff and the loss of skills are also key issues.
Priority
The public services need to have a greater say on how training is delivered and that the frameworks are fit for purpose.
