The oldest Yew Tree in Herefordshire in the grounds of Much Marcle Churchyard is 1508 years old which means the tree was planted in at least year 500.
Cider some 65% of the UK annual production of 850 million pints is made in the county. There are approx. 10,000 acres of cider orchards in the county (2011).
The River Wye is one of the leading canoeing rivers in the country. Between Hay and Chepstow there is 100 miles of canoeing river flowing through the countryside.
Admiral Lord Nelson was made a Freeman of Hereford when he visited the city in 1802 and was entertained at the City Arms Hotel in Broad Street.
The River Wye was voted as the best river in England and Wales in 2011 by the Our Rivers Campaign which includes the RSPB, WWF-UK, the Angling Trust and the STA.
Hergest Court’s local legends tell of a rampaging evil squire in form of a black bull accompanied by a big black dog and were the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes The Hound of the Baskervilles.
Ross-on-Wye is known as the ‘Birth Place of Tourism’ as it was from here that the first tours were organised purely for leisure and appreciation of the “picturesque” in the mid 18th century.
