Seek out the little bars, coffee stops and restaurants tucked away in the characterful side streets. Potter amongst the galleries, shops and foodie delights like quality butchers, dedicated cheese shop and a delicious delicatessen, and there is often a farm shop purveying Herefordshire fine farm foods straight from plough to plate.
The Leominster area does history by the bucket and its own museum tells the story of the town’s heritage from Roman times. Add in magnifiscent buildings like Leominster Priory, which has many events and is known as a venue for plays and theatre and features the last surviving ducking stool, as well as Castles to Courts, with beautiful National Trust properties like 11th century designed Berrington Hall, which has the last landscape garden designed by Capability Brown, and stunning Grange Court with its public green, widely regarded as King’s carpenter John Abel’s finest work, in the town itself.
Hampton Court Castle tucked away in Hope-under-Dinmore offers another great attraction with many seasonal events, and nearby Queenswood Country Park and Arboretum provides stunning walks and views across the county and is a wonderful picnic spot.
Herefordshire is famously known for its Hereford Cattle but Leominster is also the historical home of the Ryeland Sheep and, whilst visiting, you simply must explore how the ‘Lemner Ore’ became recognised for its top quality wool, a must-have for the textile trade in the middle ages. Step back in time and enjoy this most traditional part of Herefordshire.
