Hereford Cathedral is home to a community which has worked and worshipped together continuously for over 1,300 years and welcomes thousands of tourists and pilgrims annually.
The present building includes examples of architecture, stained glass and art from all periods which can be further explored by taking part in one of the cathedral tours, led by experienced and knowledgeable guides. In the warmer months, visitors are also able to explore the private gardens of the cathedral with a guided tour or take part in a tower tour to see one of the most spectacular views of Hereford city and beyond.
There are many opportunities for visitors to experience the music of Hereford Cathedral. Throughout the summer months a series of Lunchtime Organ Re- citals take place on Tuesdays with organists travelling from across the world to play on the Father Willis Organ.
There is also a range of concerts and musical events which take place during the year and, of course, Evensong is a wonderful opportunity to hear Hereford Cathedral Choir and find some peace and tranquillity after a busy day.
The Cathedral Café is located in the
historic environment of the 15th-century Bishop’s Cloister and offers home-made hot and cold meals, seasonal soups, sandwiches and a tempting array of hand-crafted cakes. In the summer the adjacent Chapter House Garden is filled with visitors enjoying refreshments in the sunshine.
Hereford Cathedral is also home to the Mappa Mundi & Chained Library which draws visitors and scholars from across the world. The Hereford Mappa Mundi is the largest medieval world map to survive and records how scholars interpreted the world over 700 years ago. Sitting alongside the Mappa Mundi is the fascinating Chained Library which holds over 1,500 rare books, including 229 medieval manuscripts.
During 2020, Hereford Cathedral will be continuing their programme of events and services which celebrate the 700th anniversary of the canonisation of St Thomas Cantilupe, featuring a range of special services, talks and exhibitions.
