The City of Hereford has one of the oldest Mayoralties in the country, with an unbroken line of Mayors stretching back to 1382.
Charles I gave Hereford City its motto, “Invictae Fidelitatis Praemium”, translated as “Reward for faithfulness unconquered”.
Hereford is a ‘city’ not because of its beautiful cathedral but because it has Royal Charters granting it that right.
Richard I (the Lionheart) granted Hereford its first charter in 1189.
Hereford boasts to being home to one of only four 1217 Magna Carta (Great Charter of the Liberties setting out the laws of the land) to survive.
Hereford Cathedral houses 10 bells in the tower, one of which is known as the
“Grand Old Lady” as they are a unique ring of bells.
There are only eight privately owned
Toll Bridges left in the UK one of which is at Whitney in Herefordshire. 245 years on it still spans the beautiful River Wye near Hay-on-Wye.
In the 14th century, babies in Herefordshire were baptised in cider, on the grounds that it was cleaner than water.
