The thing with rural Herefordshire is that you need to know where to find the good food, craft cider and great little events that let you enjoy winter in the sticks. Here’s some help...
Tucked off the beaten track in the village of its name, The Kilpeck Inn’s menu is served in the rustic style bar and restaurant, with snuggly sheepskins on the chairs and rooms if you’ve indulged too much in the wine list.
Ty Gwyn Cider has quite a celebrity following including Oz Clarke and Alex Polizzi, and Pete Brown has hailed it heartily in his book World’s Best Cider. Look out for it in shops and bars and meet them at food festivals throughout the year, or order it direct from their website. Get active for a great cause and join the Huntington Chase challenge on 15 October; an 11km chase via
your selected mode (horse, running, cycle) across Hergest Ridge, raising proceeds towards the local About Face Theatre Company. Talking of Hergest, Hergest Croft holds its annual Autumn Fair the next day on 16 October, with free guided walks in the autumn colours of the garden and a wonderful fair of craft, produce and plant stalls. The fireworks at Kington Recreation Ground always go with a bang, and the famous Festive Food Fair is back on 3 December, showcasing delicious local products and produce in the town centre.
