In the north of Herefordshire you will find a trail of beautiful black and white villages, each bursting with charm and history. With attractive streams and rivers, picture-book settlements, curious buildings, superb tearooms, pubs, restaurants, galleries and scenic views, the villages are steeped in history and tradition with much to explore.
Weobley (pronounced Webbly) Having won The One Show’s 2016 Village-of-the-Year, Weobley is ‘quintessentially English’ with enchanting timbered buildings, some dating back
to 1400. Follow the village Heritage Trail and uncover the ‘Throne', a large 400 year old building where it is purported that King Charles I spent the night.
Kinnersley
Kinnersley is most noted for its Castle,
a Norman fortress later rebuilt as an Elizabethan manor house by the powerful Vaughan family. Its impressive church with its distinctive saddleback tower sits
alongside the castle and is home to an interesting collection of antiquities, one of which is the very fine Jacobean monument to Francis Smallman (d. 1633), lord of the manor at Kinnersley.
Dilwyn
Dilwyn thought to be Old English (Anglo Saxon) for ‘a hidden place’ is certainly scenic. With a beautiful central green, village pub and tea room, Dilwyn is designated as a conservation area and has many historic buildings and interesting features. The 12thC village church of St Mary has the only surviving effigy; a knight from circa 1320.
